A Day in the City

A Day In The City

¡Let's discover our city! 👋✨

These weeks we are going to discover our cities and learn a lot of useful vocabulary and expressions such as: places in the city, prepositions of place, infinitive of purpose (I go there to…), using must for obligation, and different shops. We will also include some gamification activities and videos to practice. Let’s begin! 🏙️

1. Places in the City

In a city, there are many places you can visit:

  • Park

  • Library

  • Museum

  • Supermarket

  • Restaurant

  • Hospital

  • Bakery

  • Cinema

  • Bank

  • School

  • Police Station

Example:

  • “I go to the park to play.”

  • “I go to the hospital to visit my grandfather.”

2. Prepositions of Place

We use prepositions to say where things are:

  • in (inside)

  • on (on top of)

  • under (below)

  • next to (beside)

  • behind (at the back)

  • between (in the middle of two)

  • in front of (before something)

Example:

  • “The bakery is next to the supermarket.”

  • “The library is between the park and the school.”

3. Infinitive of Purpose (I go there to…)

We use to + verb to explain why we do something.

Examples:

  • “I go to the supermarket to buy fruit.”

  • “I go to the library to read books.”

4. Must for Obligation

We use must when something is necessary or important.

Examples:

  • “We must do our homework.”

  • “You must cross the street carefully.”

  • "You must be quiet in the library"

Remember: after must, use the verb in its simple form (no “to”).

  • “We must study for the test.”

5. Different Shops

In the city, you can find many shops:

  • Bakery – to buy bread and pastries.

  • Butcher’s – to buy meat.

  • Greengrocer’s – to buy fruits and vegetables.

  • Pharmacy – to buy medicine.

  • Clothes shop – to buy clothes.

Examples:

  • “I go to the bakery to buy bread.”

  • “I go to the clothes shop to buy a new T-shirt.”
